I wish to share with you the difficult news that following a trial this week at Paisley Sheriff Court, Canon Stephen Baillie has been convicted of the sexual assault of an adult man.
I know that this will be upsetting and unsettling for so many of you, especially for those who know him or who have been part of the parish during his ministry.
At this time, I ask you in a particular way to remember in your prayers the person who reported the offence, mindful of the courage required to come forward and take part in the judicial process.
This matter was reported directly to Police Scotland, and the Diocese was not approached before the police investigation began.
Because the victim in this case was not identified as a child or vulnerable adult, the circumstances do not fall within the Church's safeguarding procedures as defined in national policy. Even so, the behaviour established in court is not consistent with the standards of conduct or the trust associated with priestly ministry.
A canonical process, which was previously initiated and suspended pending the court's decision, in accordance with Church law, will now resume so the diocese can consider what further action to take. Canon Baillie has not been involved in ministry since his arrest in November 2024. Following his conviction, he has been removed from his role as Parish Priest.
To ensure that parish life continues, Father Dan Fitzpatrick will continue to serve your pastoral needs.
I recognise that news such as this can raise many emotions and questions. Anyone who feels affected or troubled is strongly encouraged to seek pastoral support through the Diocese; contact details are available from the Diocesan and Parish website.
Let us continue to pray for all those affected, and for our parish community, asking the Lord to guide us in faith, compassion and hope.
